“From Dead Broke Carpet Cleaner To One Of The Most Connected Businessman On The Planet!”
I was 18-years-old and in my worst state. I weighed 105 pounds from freebasing cocaine and was inches away from rock bottom.
I knew something needed to shift. I moved away to live with my father in New Mexico so I could get off drugs.
Once I came out of the fog of addiction, and felt stable enough to move back out on my own, I decided to go back to community college in Arizona. Here is a snapshot of my actual report card:
Yes, I got “C” in “Principles of Marketing” and an “F” in “Owning and Operating a Small Business.” Not quite the fast-track for a bright future.
Despite what the report card said, in the early ‘90s I decided to start a carpet cleaning business.
I was dead broke and living off credit cards when a high school friend asked me if I wanted to go jet skiing.
I originally said no because I was up to my neck in debt. I had been in the carpet cleaning business for two years, had gone through the proper training, bought all the right equipment, and treated people fairly and honestly.
I was doing everything I thought was right, and yet I still wasn’t making any money.
My friend told me that the guy who owned the jet skis was a multimillion dollar real estate investor–and that immediately got my attention.
So, I decided to go.
I sat down on the end of the tailgate of the pickup truck overlooking the lake with this seasoned investor, and spilled my guts out to him.
I told him that I owned a struggling carpet cleaning business and wanted advice on how I could go into another industry where I could make more money. The first thing he asked me was, “Is there anyone else in your industry who’s making what you consider to be a large amount of money?”
After thinking for a moment, I said, “Yes, there are a couple of carpet cleaning businesses in my area that do over a million dollars a year and I think that’s a lot of money.”
Then the multimillionaire investor said:
This wasn’t what I wanted to hear, but it was exactly what I needed to hear.
In that moment, I realized I wasn’t broke because of the business I was in or because of what I was doing. It was because I didn’t know the fundamentals of marketing.
In that moment, everything shifted.
I started reading personal development books, investing in business courses, and seminars to learn as much as I could about how to be successful in business. I knew there were brilliant people who had figured this out already.
I just needed to surround myself with them and learn.
Fast forward to a couple years after that jet ski trip; I used everything I learned about business and built a million dollar carpet cleaning business which led me to teaching other carpet cleaners how to run their own successful businesses.
I became one of the Nightingale-Conant’s most well known publishers with my program “Piranha Marketing” and it continued to be their number one best-selling marketing program for nearly a decade.
Since then, I’ve founded Genius Network and GeniusX, the highest level marketing and business groups for industry transformers and leaders in the world. I’m the co-host of iTunes top rated podcasts, I Love Marketing with Dean Jackson and 10X Talks with Dan Sullivan.
